With a plethora of quality defensemen on the roster, the Canadiens may be looking to move one of them as they shop for a second-line scorer.

The return of Andrei Markov to the lineup coupled with the solid performance from Alexandre Picard has pushed the Habs to eight defensemen on the active roster.

Markov's return hasn't surprised anyone, though Picard's play has him tied with Michael Cammalleri for the team lead with a plus-7 rating.

"He's a veteran defenceman and he plays well within his limitations. I think you have to give him credit," Canadiens head coach Jacques Martin told the Montreal Gazette. "He didn't get the first opportunity. Ryan (O'Byrne) got the first opportunity, but when (Picard) got in there, he played well. I know, as a GM in Florida, I inquired about him from some of his previous coaches and they spoke highly of him. He's not flashy, but he's steady and his stats indicate that."

Picard's the only Canadiens rearguard with a two-way contract, but Habs GM Pierre Gauthier has been on the lookout for help up front, prompting speculation that a defenseman could be on the way out.

It's believed veteran Jaroslav Spacek's name has been tossed around trade calls, though nothing appears imminent.

While Spacek will play tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets, Martin could sit him in the near future in favor of Picard.

"You have to be fair and treat people with respect," Martin said. "If my memory is correct, I believe Craig Rivet of the Buffalo Sabres has been a healthy scratch the past couple of games. And when I was in Ottawa, I remember sitting Randy Cunneyworth in the playoffs when he was my captain."

While rumors have already started regarding Los Angeles' interest in Calgary captain Jarome Iginla if he were to become available, there may be another option that would be a better fit for the surging Kings.

Stars center Brad Richards is in the final year of a long-term contract and although new prospective ownership has the resources to re-sign the 30-year-old native of Murray Harbor, P.E.I., he may be more valuable to Dallas in a trade as a rental should the Stars fall out of contention after a strong early start.

One league source thinks acquiring Richards would make the Kings a definite Stanley Cup contender.

"Jarret Stoll has arguably been the Kings' MVP so far, but he's never proven he can produce consistently over an entire season," the source conveyed before Saturday's game against the New Jersey Devils in Los Angeles. "Richards has won a Cup in Tampa and has a personality that would fit in nicely with this young team.

"If you put Brad into the second-line center position and drop Stoll to the fourth line pivot, that's a deep team with Anze Kopitar and Michal Handzus as fixtures on the first and third line."

Stoll's name has popped up in recent trade speculation, though his recent play appears to have solidified his position on the Kings.

"Though Stoll would be on the fourth line, his minutes wouldn't be reduced too much when you consider he'll still play the point on the powerplay and the penalty kill because of his prowess on faceoffs," the source added.

While Iginla would add scoring punch on the wing, he has $14 million left on his contract that will expire at age 35, numbers that would impact impending deals with restricted free agents Drew Doughty, Wayne Simmonds and Jack Johnson.

The Flames are also in a battle for the division lead and Iginla's turned on his game of late, which will likely prevent Calgary from moving him without acquiring a top-tier player in return.

As for Richards, Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk is in no rush to make a move and prefers to sign him to a long-term extension. If new ownership is in place in the coming months and the Stars are able to ink Richards to a new deal, the team may look once again at shopping center Mike Ribeiro.

Kevin Bieksa's name has been circulating through trade talks for months and the return of Sami Salo to the Canucks' defense could prompt further speculation, reports the Vancouver Sun.

Salo has been out of action with an Achilles tendon injury and is expected to return in the early part of the new year.

Bieksa, who has struggled so far this season and has juggled linemates, is in the final year of his contract and has a cap hit of $3.75 million. It's believed he could be moved out as the Canucks look for depth up front.

"Right now my job assignment is playing against the other team's top line and I feel like I have done a pretty good job and that gives our team a chance to win," Bieksa told the Sun. "Shutting down those guys is great, but at the same time it is also my job to contribute a little bit and take a little bit of heat off the forwards. That goes for all of our defensemen."

In 10 games so far this season, Bieksa has been held off the scoresheet, but has accumulated 10 penalty minutes.

The Tampa Bay Lightning appears to be interested in signing free agent defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron, according to a report in Montreal's La Presse.

It was originally thought that the Canadiens might have interested in re-signing Bergeron, who played for the Habs last season, but the team hasn't contacted him.

Instead, the Lightning and the Anaheim Ducks are among the interested parties.

Bergeron's agent, Paul Corbeil, told La Presse that the Lightning has expressed an interest in his client, but talks have been informal and the two sides have not yet discussed terms.

In 60 games with the Habs last season, Bergeron picked up 13 goals and 21 assists for 34 points.

With Jeff Carter and Claude Giroux locked up to new contracts, the Philadelphia Flyers are shifting their focus to Ville Leino, reports the Camden Courier-Post.

Leino, 27, is in the final year of his contract and can become an unrestricted free agent next July.

"I've had some conversations with Ville's agent (Bill Zito)," Flyers GM Paul Holmgren told the Courier-Post. "Obviously, he's a guy we want to keep in our organization, so we'll do what we can."

The Flyers have been signing the core of their roster to extensions some believe fall well below market value.

Holmgren and his staff have managed to keep the key components of the team's roster in tact, which has allowed those players to potentially remain together for a number of years.

"It's tough with the cap," Leino told the paper. "These guys are signing big deals. We'll see in the future. I enjoy being here and it's a good fit."

The Courier-Post suggests the Flyers might need to complete a trade in order to accommodate Leino's new contract, which could be around $2 million per year or higher.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Penguins could use an offensive-minded game-changer who can play on one of their top two lines.

The Penguins waved goodbye to Alexei Ponikarovsky and Bill Guerin this past summer and failed to replace them, creating an open position up front.

Pittsburgh's secondary scoring has struggled, as the likes of Chris Kunitz, Tyler Kennedy, Mike Comrie and rookie Mark Letestu have less than 10 points each. Even Evgeni Malkin is producing at less than a point-per-game rate.

The Post-Gazette suggests the Penguins could use a player like New York Islanders left wing Matt Moulson, who was drafted by Pittsburgh in 2003.

Last season with the Islanders, Moulson scored 30 goals. This year, he already has six.

"He's not fleet of foot, but he has really good instincts and good hands," Penguins GM Ray Shero told the Post-Gazette. "If we had signed him and he scored 30 for us, I'd say, 'Heck, our scouts did a great job.' But our scouts didn't recommend signing him."

Shero has been looking for a top-six winger to help balance his team's attack.

The Sharks have been looking for a mobile defenseman since the summer after Rob Blake retired, and the search still appears to be ongoing.

However, San Jose GM Doug Wilson's attempt to obtain a puck-moving rearguard hasn't come easy and he may be forced to move a key piece in order to facilitate a move.

According to the Edmonton Journal, the Sharks' secondary scoring has struggled this season. In an attempt to shake up the roster, the paper suggests the Sharks should trade Devin Setoguchi for an offensive-minded defenseman.

Setoguchi, 23, has tallied just two goals and two assists in 15 games with the Sharks so far this season.

The native of Tamber, Alberta has seen his production trail off since 2008-09 when he scored 31 goals and added 34 assists for 65 points.

The Sharks haven't been off to the start they had hoped for and currently sit eighth in the Western Conference.

A published report suggests Rogers Communications is in talks to buy the Toronto Maple Leafs in a deal worth more than $1 billion.

Citing anonymous sources, the Toronto Star reports the sale would include the NBA's Toronto Raptors, Toronto FC of Major League Soccer and the Marlies, the Maple Leafs' American Hockey League minor hockey team.

The $1.3 billion deal would be the biggest transaction in Canadian sport history and transform Rogers Communications Inc., which already owns the Toronto Blue Jays, into one of the most powerful sports enterprises in North America.

Sources said the deal to buy a majority stake in Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan would include the Leafs and Raptors TV stations, but not MLSE's real estate holdings.

"I know it's real," a top sports industry executive, who requested anonymity, told the newspaper. "I've heard it from Rogers at a high executive level and from MLSE at (the highest) level."

Spokespersons with both Rogers and the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan declined comment.

“It's our policy to neither confirm or deny,” said Deborah Allan, director of communications and media relations for the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan.

Richard Peddie, MLSE's chief executive officer, referred all questions to Teachers' representatives.

“It's a shareholder matter,” he said. “I have not been involved in any discussions and I have no knowledge of it.”

As the New York Rangers look to acquire some help up front, the club could be shopping young defenseman Matt Gilroy as part of a package.

According to the Ottawa Sun, Gilroy is believed to be available and being dangled as trade bait.

Gilroy, 26, is making $1.75 million and can become a restricted free agent next summer.

The Rangers are interested in Dallas Stars center Brad Richards, though the Stars are not expected to entertain the thought of trading him until closer to the Feb. 28 trade deadline.

The Montreal Canadiens would like to get veteran defenseman Hal Gill locked up to a new contract before the season is over, the Ottawa Sun reports.

Gill, who is making $2.25 million this season, can become an unrestricted free agent next July if he isn't inked to an extension.

According to the Sun, the Canadiens have held preliminary talks with Gill's representatives and discussions are expected to pick up steam in the New Year.

Meanwhile, the Canadiens are still in search for a top-six forward. Habs GM Pierre Gauthier wants to acquire a scoring winger to help balance Montreal's offensive attack, but so far he's been unsuccessful.

Mike Cammalleri - Scott Gomez - Jarome Iginla
Andrei Kostitsyn - Tomas Plekanec - Brian Gionta
Mathieu Darche - Lars Eller - Jeff Halpern
Travis Moen - Tom Pyatt - Maxim Lapierre

P.K. Subban - Cory Sarich
Josh Gorges - Hal Gill
Alexandre Picard - Mathieu Carle (ou finir par signé MAB)

Carey Price
Alex Auld

@Calgary: Roman Hamrlik, Jaroslav Spacek, Benoit Pouliot, Yannick Weber, Dany Kristo, Ben Maxwell, 1st Pick 2011, 2nd Pick 2012 & Conditionnal Pick 2012 or 2013.
