There is no question in my mind that the Atlanta Thrashers are going to trade Ilya Kovalchuk and I believe that the sweepstakes for the star sniper is unofficially on.

That being said, Thrashers' general manager Don Waddell is not in a position that he can go out and make a deal for future considerations such as the Toronto Maple Leafs pick that belongs to the Boston Bruins.

He will not be able to go back and sell that idea to his market right now. He won't be able to sell the idea of a bunch of kids from the Los Angeles Kings like Thomas Hickey and Colten Teubert as the return that he gets on Kovalchuk. If he is going to make a move, it is going to have to be for bigger name players.

The Calgary Flames are a team that may, and I stress MAY, be interested. However if they are, they're going to have to talk about some of the 'big boys' - like Dion Phaneuf amongst others - to be included.

If it's not Phaneuf then there is a good chance that the Chicago Blackhawks will be interested. I'm not saying that talks have been made, but I am saying that guys like Patrick Sharp or Cam Barker or David Bolland will be in the mix. Legitimate, bonafide NHL players are what Waddell is looking for in return and he is looking for a couple of them.

I think that at the end of the day, both Chicago and Calgary will be in that group to pursue Kovalchuk and pursue him hard.

Consider Sheldon Souray officially on the market.

The Oilers defenceman gave GM Steve Tambellini a list of preferences in the event that he is shipped out before the trade deadline, according to the National Post.

Souray was on the record as saying he'd waive his no-movement clause if the circumstances were to his liking, and he has since given his ideal scenarios to his agent and Oilers management, the paper said.

"I've talked to both separately," Souray said on Sunday. "The ball's in their court."

Souray is not necessarily asking out of Edmonton, but he is asserting where he'd be willing to go if a trade were to take place.

The 6'4, 223-pound blueliner could be one of many changes Edmonton will need to make in the coming weeks and months. The Oilers are a league-worst 16-28-6 and they have exactly one win in their last 18 games.

Souray signed a five-year contract in 2007 that is supposed to see him in Edmonton through the end of the 2011-12 season, and the 33-year-old's no-move clause expires this coming July.

"I just gave them my opinion and from there they will do whatever they want to do. I'm not really thinking about it. I'm not going to tie anyone's hands," he said, adding it was just business and that he was proud to be an Oiler.

"There were reasons I chose Edmonton, so the situation will have to be a good one for me to change," said Souray. "But they could wait (until July) and do whatever they want. Maybe they'll want to keep me here. Maybe they'll want to move me out.

"It's no secret my family is as important as the game."

Souray did not give any indication about which teams were on his list of preferences. The NHL's trade deadline is March 3.

Souray has four goals and nine assists in 34 games with Edmonton this season.

The Elk Point, Alberta native was selected 71st overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. He has played for the Devils, the Montreal Canadiens and the Oilers.

His best season came in 2006-07 with the Habs, when he put up 26 goals and 38 assists for 64 points in 81 games.

En tk chez nous sa disait toujours ça d'échanger Sourray contre un cone orange sa ferait pareil .. (Niveau défensif je parle). J'avoue qu'en PP y torchait.

Ben si t'as appris à lire à l'école, tu verras que j'ai parler du PP.. Prend pas un doctorat pour savoir qu'il en arrachait en défensive là. Et pis j'ai jamais entendu personne dire qui fallait le trader, justement à cause qu'il avait scorer genre 20 buts dont un bonne gang en PP msemble

1 - Aucune équipe va le prendre, il a été soumis deux fois et donc, les équipes n'auraient eu qu'à payer la moitié de son salaire jusqu'à la fin de la saison et mettre cette moitié sur la masse salariale, un très bon deal pour une équipe qui manque d'attaque

2 - Pourquoi le CH ne fait pas la même chose avec Georges Laraque? Pourquoi, au lieu de le laisser chez lui, qu'il ne le libère pas? Bob Gainey va payer sa libération la saison prochaine, alors pourquoi ne le fait-il pas dès maintenant?
